When you come into the menu of Birds of Steel do you immediately get the feeling of World War 2 and that you’re on your way to be a part of it, much because of the music and how Konami have chosen to put the layout of the menu. Well… at least I did get that feeling.

Historical campaign

In the Historical campaign can you be a part of both the American and Japanese forces in the pacific war, 1941 – 1942. You won’t just be a part of the missions here but you will also be played some video recordings and given some World War 2 history as well, which is great as this give the game more authenticity and feeling. The campaign starts with the attacks on Pearl Harbor and from there will you go through the campaigns at Battle of Wake Island, Battle of the Coral Sea, Battle of Midway and the Guadalcanal campaign.

During the missions will you play bombing missions and dog fight missions. There are three different types of bombing, you have the dive bombing, where you go from a high altitude and dive towards the target to drop the bombs, you have the style where you just have to drop the bombs from whatever altitude you feel like as long as you hit the target, and the last one (my favorite) the torpedo bombing where you have to go as low as 100 – 150 meters over the water surface straight towards the ship with top speed and you also have to hold the plane in level so the torpedo don’t go beneath the ship.

The dog fights kind of explains them self, but you don’t always fight fighters nor only fly the fighters in these dog fights, you also fly the bombers and have to use the gunner in the back to shoot down the enemies and there are some missions where you’re supposed to shoot down the bombers. There are also some missions where you’re fighting off the invading ground forces with the fighter only. For each mission will you be a part of a four plane squad, this means that you have four chances to succeed without having to land on either the airfield or hangar ship to refill ammo and fuel.

This is actually a cool feature for this game, sometimes do you have to refill and that means that you have to land the right way so you don’t destroy either parts of the plane or crash it to bits. The interesting part with the landing procedure is that you don’t have any stats or guidance when you’re going in for landing, so you have to go through the pre-war chapters so you can learn the basics of how things work, including the landing procedure. The campaign on both sides aren’t so very long with super many missions, but then again there are some online game modes in this game as well.

Multiplayer:

The multiplayer part contains more or less the same as the historical campaign but instead of just fighting A.I’s will you be fighting other players, which will give you more challenge and in the end make you a better pilot. There are also a tournament mode and an event mode in this menu as well, but there have been no new events or tournaments after the release party.

Skills

If you’re one of those who have played the games Ace combat or Hawx series will you learn pretty fast that your skills in those games have to be put away, since flying a World War 2 plane is a whole lot different experience from the modern planes of today. This actually gives the game yet another authentic felling and will challenge even the most experienced player. For instance the speed control have been set to the right stick, together with the rudder controls which can be a pain in the ass sometimes in a dog fight and you suddenly have no engine power because you didn’t pay attention to the throttle speed when you’re adjusted the plane slightly to the left or right. Of course this and the other ways to fly the plane is just a matter of training and how fast you’re able to learn it. Flying the World War 2 planes demands patience if you want to stay in the air, this means that if you try to turn faster than what the plane are capable of will the plane stall and start diving uncontrolled down towards the ground.

Conclusion: The game itself is well made with historical facts, great gameplay and graphics. My only problem is that I tend to get impatient when I play a game where you’re supposed to do the same things over and over again without other things to do, but it is a flying game and it’s not Konami’s fault that the genre is like this in the end. So in the end, it’s another great game from Konami.

Rating: 9/10 Enjoyable game

Street Fighter x Tekken is more or less what you can imagine if you’ve played either one or both games earlier. It seems like Namco had to make some compromises of Tekken when it comes to the combo’s part of the characters, by that do I mean that they had to take away some of the combo’s so it wouldn’t be overkill to choose fighters from the Tekken side and ignore the Street Fighter side. This is a good thing as both sides are equal and the only thing that makes a difference is the player and the Gem units, not that the gem units have that much to say but it can be the little edge that can make the difference of winning or losing.

Game Modes

There are a few different game modes for this game as usual for this genre, and it looks like Capcom have found their way of creating something of their own with the challenge mode. This mode contains: Trials, Missions and tutorial.

-Trials are where you can either learn the combos for each character or polish your combo skills and other techniques.

-Missions do you have to defeat a CPU opponent under special conditions.

-Tutorial is where you learn the basic rules of the game and can train on them too.

The mode I was referring to regarding Capcom’s own path with the modes are of course the mission part and it seems like it’s here to stay, which is a good thing as this give the player some challenges to overcome. But I have to say that I’m more pleased of the way they’ve created the mission this time versus the Marvel vs. Capcom version where the missions is only to learn and complete the different combos of the characters, which in the end can be too much and boring. So kudos to Capcom for their efforts.

Of course do they also have the standard game modes that these games can’t be without and that are the Arcade, online and training parts. The Training mode is more or less like the Tutorial and the Trials, but with freestyle. The Arcade story is as usual somewhat short but this time the story works as a foundation for future sequels with the open ending. A thing that I really like is that you can be every character in the Arcade even from the first time you start the game, meaning that you can be the final boss from the start if you want to and not have to unlock it so it can be playable.

The online part is something I usually enjoy wetter I win or lose, but when it lags isn’t it fun anymore. This is a major issue I’ve come across even when I played against one from my own country it lagged as much as if I would play against one from across the world, and I would know as I’ve done that too. You can change the searching criteria for your area, or any and skills either better or similar to you. You can even search for those with same time settings and so on as well. This is very good and smart, but unless they don’t fix the issue of lag, wouldn’t I recommend this game for online playing if that’s what you’re looking for.

Customization

I can’t forget to mention the customization mode. The reason for that is that in this mode can you customize your characters colors, gem units, quick combos and battle profile. So customize your characters colors describes itself, but he gem unit are new and it’s here you can assign your preferred gems to you characters.

You have some different gem types which are:

-Defensive

-Offensive

-Speed based

-Player skill based

As I mention earlier, this can be a life savior in the right combination. You can create 3 sets of a combination of 3 gems per combination. This gives you an opening for exploring what suits your fighting style best and optimize your character.

The Quick combos are preset and unfortunately can’t be changed, the only thing you can change are the name of the combos and which ones you want to use and to which stick you want it assigned to. It’s a shame that you can’t try out some combos of your own and create them in the quick combo menu, but then again the combos in this game have been compromised.

The Battle Profile is your online profile that your opponents can see. Here do you only have a couple of editing options and that’s it. You have the tittle and comment settings, fortunately is there a lot of options to choose between in within these two options.

Conclusion: It’s a great fighting game, and of course the combination of two of my favorite fighting games works so very well.

Rating: 8/10 Great game but the online lag dampers it.

The Story

Asura’s Wrath is the dark story about the demi god Asura which gets betrayed and framed for the emperor’s death while he and the other demi gods are fighting the world’s impure creatures. This is not all, those responsible for the betrayal also kills his wife and kidnapped his daughter for her powers for harvesting. As Asura try to save his daughter does he get himself killed and banished for over 12.000 years. When he rise from the dead and come back to the earth have the world changed for the worse, the other demi gods who betrayed Asura have taken control over the world and gathering human souls so they can kill the impure once and for all. Which means that they actually kills the people they’re supposed to save, but for some reason do the humans actually buy the lies that demi gods are using and they pray for their souls to be followed to the heavens, which is not what happens. As this is not the way Asura can be a part of, instead of fighting with the demi gods do he fight them which gets pretty ugly sometimes but necessary.

TV series or a video game?

The game is more or less made like a tv series of 3 seasons with 6 episodes in each season, along the way do you get the possibility to interact in some parts which gives the game more a video feeling rather than a game feeling which it should. The problem they get when they set it up like this is that for the first of all you will get stopped often during the gameplay which make you think why are they doing this? After each episode will you get some stats for your performance of that episode, the stats itself is worth nothing as you don’t unlock anything except for the last episode if you either get five S rankings or play 50 episodes. Anyway, the reason for the comparison between a video game and a tv series is the way Capcom have set up the layout of the beginning of each episode, with some text to get the idea of what happens in the back ground and a new intro for each episode and staff credits of those who worked on that episode. Fortunately have they made layout of the story at least seamless even with all the stops between the episodes, this actually made me keep the interest for the story and wanted more. For the story is actually very well made, beautiful and soulful and can keep your interest going the whole way to the end.

The combination of Asian mythology and sci-fi works in Capcom’s favor especially since they’ve created it so beautiful with stunning graphics and designs. So the whole game looks like an Asian inspired world which for me doesn’t matter as the ancient Asian ways are very interesting and breathtaking, just like the game’s story. In a way does the story show what a man can do and how far he can go for his family and to revenge them, which for me make the story dark but still going beautiful.

Conclusion: It’s a shame that it’s made more like a series than a game and you don’t get to do more actions, but then again in some ways is it understandable why they did it this way.

Rating: 8/10 An incredible breathtaking story.

Shoot Many Robots is the perfect example of a simple game, but yet one of the most entertaining games I’ve played. The game is only based on doing what the title says and that’s Shoot Many Robots and of course blows stuff up, and the retro 90’s style over the whole game don’t take out the fun of it. While this is the games “story” do you have other things that give this game the extra spark of humor and explosive fun.

Clothes and weapons

You have the clothes where you can change three pieces on your body, head, torso and legs, and the combinations you can use is what gives this game the extra spark of humor. I mean, you have for instance the “Baby carrier” where you actually get an achievement for completing a mission where you’re wearing it, not that it gives you other stats than babies +1 but it’s where the basic fun lies in this game. The clothes have a function though, it’s how you upgrade your stats with damage, health and so on. So looking ridiculous isn’t such a bad thing after all and how funny isn’t it that you can look like a faerie and still kill robots. Just put the crown on your head, the pink faerie wings on your back, and of course don’t forget to put on the pink tutu. This combination will give you 331damage in addition to what your weapons of choice will give you. So after all it will help you getting through and kill the robots relatively easy if you get the right combinations of clothing and weapons. Some clothes also give you the ability to slam your enemies from the air, it can make you hang in the air for a while and slide on the ground, and this will also be helpful and maybe even save you in some situations.

Crates and upgrades

The only problem here is that you have to find the crates with the items in it. If not, won’t you be able to upgrade your character and you will most likely be stuck at some point, luckily these crates aren’t too hard to find as they’re kind of eye-catching and big. For currency do you have the nuts you collect when you kill the robots, this is for the store where you can buy the gadgets you’ve found in the crates. There are also one other possibility if you don’t want to wait for a better weapon or better clothes, and that’s by buying nuts for Microsoft Points, you can also buy the gadget directly with MS points as well. For me, that kind of takes the fun and challenge out of the game so I haven’t done that, but it’s a smart option for those who are impatient.

Stars and pickups

To open up more missions further on the way do you have to get as many stars as possible on each mission, 5 is the highest you can get and getting the high rating will make it easier for you to get going on. How many stars you get depends on how many nuts you’ve collected in that mission, but just getting the nuts aren’t enough. If you want to get 5 stars do you have to hold the multiplier on max almost throughout the whole mission, but don’t worry if you don’t get it the first time. You can always do the mission over again after you have upgraded your character even better and just “fly” through the mission. Killing the robots may result in some colorful pickups that will give you a temporary boost, fill up you ammo or health and so on. These pickups are very helpful and to survive will they be crucial in some cases, and other times do you just “fly” trough a mission without having problems at all.

Missions and multiplayer

There are two different types of missions, the run and gun from start to finish and the survival missions. The run and gun missions are pretty much straight forward run and gun from start to finish, and in the survival missions do you have to survive at least the first wave to complete the mission, every other wave after that is just bonus waves that can make you even more nuts and stars. Another cool feature is the option of playing together with 3 friends online, at least for me who think everything is better with more people, and it can also make it easier to get past certain areas.

Conclusion: This game didn’t just entertain me but it also made me laugh hard and a lot, and I think the age restriction of this game are overused. Besides that, it’s one of the simplest, yet most hilarious games I’ve played for a while.

Rating: 10/10 Extremely fun for all ages.
